Blessings is the fifth of six children in a hardworking but struggling family. Her parents take on any job they can find—digging, washing, labouring—just to make ends meet.

They live in a cramped mud house with a leaking roof. Blessings sleeps on an old rack in the sitting room, and the family cooks over an open fire in the same space they sleep, putting their health and safety at risk.

With no health insurance, they rely on painkillers or overcrowded hospitals. School is a challenge for Blessings with poor sleep negatively impacting on her concentration, and she goes hungry when the family cannot get enough food.
