Elizabeth is the third born and has two older siblings. Both of her parents are casual labourers as they did not complete their education. They has struggled to earn a living to support the family so Elizabeth was unable to start school until now due to the cost of fees.

The family live in a small one roomed thatched house. This type of house has poor ventilation due to not having windows, which causes a health risk (suffocation) when the family need to cook indoors. The family do not have a permanent bathroom and bathe in the evening behind the house.

The family practices small-scale farming on a quarter-acre plot of land. They grow maize and vegetables, but the yields are insufficient to sustain them for an extended period. They have access to health care, although this can be costly as they are not yet registered under health insurance.

Elizabeth is looking forward to starting at St. Irene’s and getting to know her peers.
