Esau is a partial orphan after his father passed away following cardio-respiratory failure. His mother cares for Esau and his twin brother Jacob and does causal work to support the family. The children stay with their maternal grandmother who is also a widow. She works on people’s farms as well as selling omena (little fish) at the market to earn a living to support her five grandchildren. They live in a temporary house with three rooms.

Esau and his brother Jacob are both known for being very friendly and have good relationships with their neighbours and friends at school. Esau is a hardworking and cheerful boy. Esau does well academically in his favourite subject, mathematics and also does well in science. He has aspires to become a doctor and help those in the local community. Esau is a sporty boy who likes to ride bicycles, play volleyball and go on runs.
