Newton is the fifth-born of six siblings and is from a vulnerable family. His mother works as a farm labourer and his father is a carpenter. The family live under difficult circumstances in a two roomed house made of iron sheets which is too small to accommodate the large family. The house is in poor condition due to its age and has minimal furniture which is in disrepair. At the moment they use a kerosene lamp in the evening which is both ineffective and poses a safety risk.
The family do have some access to healthcare, however, they are not yet covered by health insurance which means this is expensive. They also do some subsistence faming by growing maize, vegetables, and sweet potatoes for their own consumption. However, the harvest is not sufficient to sustain them for long periods, so they often purchase food from the market.
Newton is looking forward to starting school at St. Irene’s. He is a naturally shy child, but is expected to grow in confidence as he starts to interact with his peers.
