Newton is the fifth-born of six siblings and is from a vulnerable family. His mother works as a farm labourer and his father is a carpenter. They live in a two roomed house made of iron sheets which is too small to accommodate the large family. The house is in poor condition due to its age and has minimal furniture which is in disrepair.
For light in the evening they use a kerosene lamp which is ineffective and poses a safety risk. The family do have some access to healthcare however this is mostly unaffordable as they do not have health insurance. The family do subsistence farming by growing maize, vegetables, and sweet potatoes for their own consumption. However, the harvest is not sufficient to sustain them for long periods and sometimes they go hungry.
