Joytes’s family lives in a three roomed semi-permanent house with an iron sheet roofing. Some parts of their house don’t have a complete walls. Joytes is the first born in a family of three, a girl and two boys. Her mother got pregnant with her while she was still in Form 4. This resulted in her mother getting married as a second wife. The marriage didn’t work out and they separated due to family conflicts among Joytes’s mother, the co wife and Joytes’s father. Joytes was then taken into care by her maternal grandmother who has another seven grandchildren in her custody, the eldest of them is in grade seven. Joytes’s grandmother is physically challenged and she uses crutches to support her movement. This makes it difficult for her to cater fully for her grandchildren’s daily needs. Joytes’s mother is in Mombasa where she does casual jobs to support herself and the other two siblings of Joytes.  Joytes shares a bed and bedding with her maternal grandmother with her cousins.

Joytes’s family has a toilet made of mud and iron sheet roofing. They have no bathroom but take a shower behind their house at night.

The Grandmother and the rest of the family practices subsistence farming where they grow vegetables, maize and beans during the rainy season.

The family fetches water from a community water spring.

What sponsorship means

The moment you start to support one of our children at St Irene’s or Noah’s Ark we instantly work on building that bond between you and your sponsored child. We’ll send you a Welcome Pack the moment your sponsorship begins and you will receive three updates throughout the year from us about your child – a home visit report, birthday update and a handwritten letter/drawing from your sponsored child.

We allocate the different sponsorship amounts you generously pledge according to the type of support needed by the children in our care. Your donation will help towards the costs of education, food security, health, psychosocial support, income generating activities and so much more!
